“Rivers Police Inspector Allegedly Kills Colleague”

A Police Inspector, identified as Victor Okus, has allegedly shot dead his colleague, Ibrahim Sani, in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, while another officer, Daniel Dauda, survived the attack.

The Rivers State Police spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying the suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

She said, “The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and distressing incident that occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, resulting in the loss of a dedicated Police Officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani ‘m’. The suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, a colleague and fellow Officer attached to 17 PMF, but on special duty at Intels, Onne, has been arrested and is currently in Police custody.

According to the Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, and based on preliminary investigations, the tragic incident occurred around 13:20 hours at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt. At the time, Inspector Ibrahim Sani (‘m’) and Inspector Daniel Dauda (‘m’), both attached to 14 PMF, Yola, were on joint guard duty alongside military personnel.

It was reported that Inspector Okus allegedly fired at his colleagues, hitting them in the head and neck regions. The injured officers were immediately taken to Nopsam Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, Inspector Sani succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Dauda continues to receive treatment. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary, Port Harcourt, for preservation and autopsy.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident to ensure that all circumstances surrounding this deplorable act are fully examined. The suspect will face an Orderly Room Trial and will subsequently be charged in court, with the assurance that justice will be served.

The CP also reminded officers that the handling of firearms while on duty is a serious responsibility, not a routine task, and emphasized the importance of prioritizing both personal safety and the safety of others to prevent such tragedies.
