Breaking: Suspension Issued to Student Nurse After Viral Footage Exposes Critical Utility Shortages at Enugu General Hospital

  • by

Governor Peter Mbah’s administration is facing growing backlash following the indefinite suspension of a student nurse who went viral after exposing the deteriorating condition of Uwani General Hospital in Enugu State.

The nurse, in an emotional follow-up video shared on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that she had been barred from her clinical duties and removed from the hospital workforce as punishment for what she described as whistle-blowing.

The controversy began in late March 2026 when the student nurse recorded and shared a video documenting what she described as distressing conditions at the state-owned facility.

In the footage, two nurses were seen lamenting that medical staff were forced to work in complete darkness due to persistent electricity outages, lack of running water, and the absence of essential life-saving equipment such as oxygen, even while attending to a pregnant woman in labour.

“I’m the nurse who posted about the hospital at Uwani. Sadly, I was given an indefinite suspension and removed from my clinical duties,” she said in the follow-up video seen by Vibeslyfe on Thursday. “Did we do anything wrong? We only wanted to draw attention to the problems, but now we are being severely punished.”

Although the Enugu State Government initially responded to the viral video by querying the hospital management and reportedly addressing some of the identified issues, public attention has since shifted from infrastructure concerns to allegations of retaliation against the whistle-blower.

Despite claims by hospital authorities that the identified deficiencies have been corrected, the management has yet to reinstate the student nurse. This has sparked outrage among civil rights advocates, many of whom have described the situation as a familiar pattern of penalizing individuals who expose systemic failures.

Earlier reports shared by healthcare workers at the facility depicted the hospital as a highly unsafe environment, raising serious concerns about patient safety and service delivery.

The indefinite suspension has placed Governor Mbah under intense public scrutiny, with many calling on him to intervene and protect the young nurse from what critics have described as administrative overreach.

“This is a government-owned hospital. It is deeply concerning that such a facility lacks basic necessities like electricity, water, and oxygen required for childbirth,” the nurses had earlier stated.

Observers are now awaiting the state government’s next move, as questions remain over whether the suspension will be upheld or reversed in favour of protecting a healthcare worker whose actions drew attention to the facility’s challenges.

Public reactions on social media have been swift, with several users criticizing the decision to suspend the nurse rather than commend her for raising awareness about critical deficiencies.

One user, @paulobijiofor, questioned the role of labour unions, alleging that authorities appeared more focused on silencing the nurse than addressing the underlying concerns.

Another user, @Favour_Sparkle3, claimed that similar challenges exist across several healthcare facilities in Enugu State, recalling instances where surgeries were reportedly cancelled due to oxygen shortages.

Others expressed frustration over broader governance issues, arguing that infrastructure development should prioritize quality and essential public services.

Meanwhile, efforts by Vibeslyfe to obtain an official response from the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, were unsuccessful, as calls placed to him were not answered. However, a ministry official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the suspension remains in effect.

According to the official, the student nurse’s actions were considered a violation of civil service regulations.

“What the student nurse did was against established civil service procedures. Even if their observations were accurate, there are designated channels through which such concerns should be reported,” the official stated.
