The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has confirmed the tragic death of six final-year Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Nursing students in a fatal road accident along the Ilorin–Ogbomoso highway.

In a special statement issued on Tuesday by the Registrar, Mrs. Olayinka O. Balogun, the university disclosed that the students lost their lives in a devastating crash that occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Otte in Kwara State.

The victims — Shehu Nana Firdawsi Hamza, Idris Jamila, Abdulraheem Maimunah Hamza, Blessing Kevwe, Owoicho Elizabeth, and Aroke Ozavize Victoria — were reportedly travelling in a commercial bus from Suleja in Niger State to Ogbomoso for their final examinations when the accident happened.

Describing the incident as heartbreaking and deeply painful, the university noted that the students were in the final phase of their academic journey and remained resolute in their pursuit of excellence.

LAUTECH expressed profound condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones, affirming its solidarity with them during what it described as a period of “immeasurable grief.” The institution also urged members of the public to keep the families in their thoughts and prayers, asking for strength and fortitude in the face of the devastating loss.

The Ilorin–Ogbomoso highway has witnessed several fatal accidents in recent years, reigniting concerns over road safety and the condition of critical federal highways connecting Kwara State and Oyo State.

“With heavy hearts, the management of LAUTECH announces the tragic loss of six of our cherished ODL Nursing students who were involved in a ghastly motor accident on Sunday, 22nd February 2026.

“This devastating development has plunged our academic community into mourning. These students were not only determined to fulfil their educational aspirations but embodied the resilience, hope, and progress that define our institution.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to their families, friends, and colleagues. As we grieve as a university, we stand united with them in this moment of profound sorrow and pray that their memories will continue to inspire compassion, perseverance, and unity within our community,” the statement added.
