US actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his lead role in the hit TV series Dawson’s Creek, has passed away at the age of 48.
Van Der Beek died on Wednesday after a battle with colorectal cancer, which was diagnosed in 2023.
A statement posted on Van Der Beek’s Instagram page confirmed his passing, noting that he faced his final days with “courage, faith, and grace.”
His wife, Kimberly, shared the news, requesting privacy for the family during their grief.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” she wrote.
Van Der Beek rose to fame for his portrayal of Dawson Leery in the 1998–2003 teen drama, which followed a group of friends growing up in a small Massachusetts town.
Van Der Beek also appeared in films such as Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, though he often struggled to escape the shadow of his iconic television role.
In 2011, he reflected on his career, saying he was proud of his past work and had no regrets.
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of tributes and condolences from fans, colleagues, and fellow actors across the entertainment industry.
